These films will compete for awards such as the Golden Fireball Award, Formosa Human Rights Award, and Asian New Wave Award, with a total prize pool exceeding 1 million TWD.
The international shorts section features several award-winning shorts from esteemed film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. This year's lineup consists of 29 narrative films, 4 animated films, 6 experimental films, and 2 documentaries, with 18 of the films hailing from Asia. The competition in the international category is fierce, showcasing not only engaging live-action narratives but also remarkable creativity in experimental, documentary, and animated genres. Through careful audio-visual coordination and narrative development, these works resonate with universal emotions while providing audiences with insights into the everyday lives and cultural nuances of diverse regions.
The Taiwan shorts section comprises 15 narrative films, 3 experimental films, 2 animated films, and 1 documentary, including 10 student works. These films address a variety of themes, highlighting contemporary issues, historical perspectives, and experimental techniques. They explore fantastical human encounters, the interplay of personal reflections and societal challenges, as well as profound moments of life and death, the intricacies of emotional relationships, and the examination of familial and political sentiments. This audiovisual journey enables audiences to engage with the hearts and minds of Taiwanese filmmakers and islanders, showcasing a vibrant spectrum of cross-temporal and interdisciplinary creativity from the past year.
A total of 62 shortlisted films from the Kaohsiung Film Festival's International Short Film Competition will be screened during the festival.
