Synopsis
In a pub frequented by foreigners, 60-something widow Emmi meets the Moroccan Ali, at least 20 years her junior. Ali dances with Emmi, they chat, he accompanies her home. He moves in with her. They get married. For the others, this marriage is a scandal: Emmi’s grown children are embarrassed, the neighbors whisper, the green grocer asks her to leave his shop, the colleagues despise her. Ali starts to see his former girlfriend Barbara again, but when Emmi attempts to get him back, Ali has a breakdown. The doctor diagnoses a burst ulcer. Emmi stays with Ali, holding his hand.

Rainer Werner FASSBINDER was a German filmmaker, actor and playwright,. Born in 1945, he became a prominent figure of the New German Cinema movement at the age of 24 with his debut feature, Love Is Colder Than Death. He died from an overdose in 1982, leaving behind a filmography of over 40 feature films.
